August 2016

Dear Walter Hays Families,

We hope you have had a wonderful summer!  We are looking forward seeing everyone when we return to school on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 The school day begins at 8:25 a.m. It is a Walter Hays tradition for parents to stay and watch the annual Flag Raising Ceremony at 8:35 a.m., at the field stage on the playground. Afterwards, parents are invited to attend the Back-to-School Coffee in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Walter Hays Focus for 2016-2017

The PAUSD Focus Goals for 2016-17 incorporate three areas to provide students with a rich and relevant learning experience:

  1. High Quality Teaching and Learning: Engage every student in purposeful, joyful learning that appropriately challenges all students to ensure core content mastery and maximizes each student’s opportunity to excel academically.
  2. Equity and Access: Assure that every student has access to multiple programs, services, activities and enrichment experiences that support student learning and enable each individual to achieve his or her fullest intellectual, creative and social potential.
  3. Wellness and Safety: Provide for the social-emotional needs of students and staff and cultivate positive, healthy, identity-safe school environments that promote high levels of connection, engagement and overall well-being throughout the school community.

Walter Hays School Handbook

Each family will have access to the Walter Hays Handbook, on our school’s website. There are several new and important guidelines. Please review this booklet with your child(ren), prior to the beginning of school. Understanding the guidelines and expectations will support a positive and safe experience for all.

Staffing and Grade Level Changes:

  • Janine Rocha will return from maternity leave in mid- September to resume her job-share with teacher Anna Kearney in third grade. We are fortunate to have Angela Cole serve as substitute during her leave.  Mrs. Cole, a former Walter Hays parent and PTA President at Walter Hays, has been a wonderful addition to our staff, as she has been a long-term substitute several times in the last few years for some of our staff members.
  • Jennifer Ford will join our third-grade team. The fifth grade level has reduced from five to four classes, because of declining enrollment. We are fortunate to retain Mrs. Ford and she is excited by this new opportunity.

  • Tara Hunt has moved from third grade to teach Kindergarten with grade level partner Adriene Guriba. There will be two kindergarten classes this year and our two teachers who have previously worked together are looking forward to working together again with our youngest students. We were sorry to lose and will miss Alexandra White, our third Kindergarten teacher, also because of declining enrollment in our district.  Mrs. White will be teaching at Ohlone Elementary this year. We wish her well.
  • We are happy to welcome Jennifer Alfonso – Punzalan, as our new Librarian. Mrs. Alfonso-Punzalan  comes to us from San Mateo where she has had several years of Library – Media experience.  Michael Ambrose has moved to JLS to work with middle school students. We have appreciated all of Mr. Ambrose’s work and wish him well in his new work.
  • Stacey Myers will join our staff as the new Education Specialist. She will join our Special Education team to support students. Laveena Gole, our former Education Specialist retired from PAUSD to work on a more part-time basis so she could spend more time with family.    Ms. Myers is a second-year teacher who comes to Walter Hays highly recommended.
  • Judith Cazeao is our new English Language Learner Specialist.  She replaces Shirley Jou, who will be working at El Carmelo Elementary and the district office. We wish her well. Mrs. Cazeao, who is from the Midwest, comes to us with many years of EL teaching experience.

Please help us welcome these new wonderful professionals!

Back-to-School Events

We would like to bring to your attention the following upcoming events:

  • New Family Orientation : Monday, August 15th 3 pm-4 pm. A brief orientation and tour for families new to Walter Hays with incoming 1st-5th graders. Please meet at the picnic tables near the Embarcadero and Middlefield entrance.  During this time, you can also visit the New Family Welcome Table, Chinese Translation Table, and Spanish Translation Table for more information and to get translation help.

  • Annual Popsicle Welcome : Monday, August 15th 4 pm-5 pm. Please join us to receive your child’s Back-to-School Packet (which includes class assignment and other important information) and to reconnect with friends. If you’re not able to attend, you may have another family pick up your Packet (please call the office to inform them ahead of time), or you can pick it up at the Walter Hays office on the first day of school starting at 7:30 a.m.
  • Back-to-School Coffee : Tuesday, August 16th 8:45 am-11 am. Following the annual flag raising ceremony, parents are invited to gather in the Multi-Purpose Room.  Meet and greet friends while enjoying coffee and pastries brought to you by fellow parent volunteers.  While you’re there, find out how you can get involved – no volunteer contribution is too small.  We have various ways for you to get involved, from helping in the school library to planning events or programs, or helping with fundraising.  Joining committees is a wonderful way to enhance our school, make new friends, and help ensure our events can happen!  If you can’t attend the coffee, please email Shinu Singh at shinuis@gmail.com or Meena Alagappan at malagappan@gmail.com for more information about ways to get involved.  Also, keep up-to-date with the Walter Hays eNews which also highlights volunteer opportunities.
  • Back-to-School Nights:
    • (Kindergarten): Monday, August 29th, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.  Meet in your child’s classroom.  Mary Bussmann and your PTA team will visit every classroom to talk about the coming year.
    • (Grades 1-3) Tuesday, August 30th.  Meet in the Multi-Purpose Room from 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm and then in your child’s classroom from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
    • (Grades 4-5) Tuesday, August 30th.  Meet in the Multi-Purpose Room from 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm and then in your child’s classroom from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

Please plan for childcare as there will be no child supervision available at school.

  • Cultural Festival: Tuesday, September 13th 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.   Families, please join us on the Walter Hays playground for fun, food, festivities, and friends, all while enjoying the diverse cultures representing our school!   Families celebrate their cultures through booths which share games, songs, food, and more and offer an enriching experience for children (and parents) to “visit” many different cultures all in one evening.   In between the visits, bring a blanket to sit and enjoy entertainment, dinner, and dance.   Please contact Carine Vanslembrouck-Schultz at carine.schultz@hotmail.co.uk to sign up your booth and share your heritage!

We are looking forward to another fun-filled year at Walter Hays.   See you soon at the Annual Popsicle Welcome and the Back-to-School Coffee!

Sincerely,
