Walter Hays Community Letter - 3/31/21
Dear Walter Hays Community,
Spring is here and it is so wonderful to smell the beautiful scent of nature blooming! 🌸 I hope you all have a chance to take walks and spend time outside in this gorgeous weather. This Friday, students will be dismissed a little earlier, at 1:40 p.m., to begin Spring Break! I do hope you have a restful and rejuvenating week with your families. School will resume, Monday morning, April 12.
Walter Hays Move-a-Thon
Walter Hays students are motivated to raise money for the Ecumenical Hunger Program! During this past year, many families and individuals have been hit hard by the global pandemic. Walter Hays would like to help by giving to the Ecumenical Hunger Program, which is an independent, non-profit organization located in East Palo Alto that support local families and individuals who are experiencing economic and personal hardship, as they regain stability and independence. EHP provides food, clothing, household essentials, support, and advocacy.
Students will share about the donation: "The week-long Move-a-thon, April 18th - April 24th, is where I will move as much as possible; run, walk, bike, swim, hopscotch, jump rope, play basketball and more. Donating is simple, and any pledge amount is appreciated! If you can help, please click on the link below, and choose 'donate now', find my name in the participant drop down, and enter your donation info. It only takes a few minutes to help make a difference. Thank you in advance for your donation and for supporting this cause. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, (student/family name)."

Kindergarten Through Grade 5 Hybrid Students Return to Campus 5-Days-A-Week
Hybrid classes will return to full time, five days per week instruction, in April. This update followed the recent CDC announcement that allows for 3' social distancing between students in the classroom. Please see highlights below:
- Grades 3-5 will return to full time instruction by April 19th. Our focus will be on the 4thand 5th Grade classes since 3rd Grade Hybrid classes returned March 8th.
- Grades Kindergarten and 2nd will return to full time instruction on April 26th, as 1st Grade returned full time February 22nd.
- There will be no changes to Full Distance Learners (FDL) this year.
- Walter Hays/PAUSD will remain vigilant in maintaining safety protocols throughout this transition including maintaining stable cohorts and 6' social distancing when eating, certified ventilation, 3' spacing student-to-student, mask wearing in classrooms and regular handwashing during the school day.
PAUSD Maintenance and Operations Department, the Tier 2 and 3 Intervention Specialists, the Music, PE and Library Department, Food Services and Transportation staff have worked with classroom teachers and me to prepare all classrooms for the return of Cohorts A and B in all grade levels for a healthy and safe return of hybrid students to school 5-days-a-week.
I invite you to a Principal's Coffee on April 1st @ 5pm. to provide you with updated information on this transition and to answer questions: https://pausd.zoom.us/j/95894715103
We are excited to welcome back our hybrid students to full time instruction and I am committed to a collaborative approach with all the stakeholders so the process is seamless. Thank you in advance for your support.
Have a healthy, safe, relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break!
